The species of the complex of P. caricina s.l. can be identified only when the host alternation is known. The pictures above therefore cannot be associated with certainty with P. caricina in the strict sense.

aecia also on veins, petioles, green shoots and young fruits; peridium cupulate, white, margin revolute. Locally strong galling and discolouration.

spermogonia, aecia

Grossulariaceae, monophagous

Ribes alpinum, aureun, nigrum, rubrum, sanguineum, uva-crispa.

on Carex

uredinia hypophyllous, light brown, on yellow spots. Urediniospores with 3(4) equatorial pores, wall thickness 1-2µm. Telia blackish brown. Teliospores 2-celled, almost without constriction clavate, narrowing into the pedicel; wall smooth, apical part of top cell moderately thickened; pedicel hyaline, up to half as long as the spore.

uredinia, telia

Cyperaceae, narrowly monophagous

Carex buxbaumii, canariensis, diandra, hordeistichos, pseudocyperus, rostrata.

Puccinia caricis Schröter, 1873; P. ribesii-caricis Klebahn, 1907; P. ribesii-pseudocyperi Klebahn, 1900.

The description above applies to caricina s.str. However, many authors maintain a much wider concept of the species. In that vision P.caricina s.l. alternates between Ribes and a variety of Carex species.

The following taxa described here are members of the complex of P. caricina s.l.: P. caricina, caricina var. ribis-ferrugineae, magnusii, pringsheimiana, ribesii-digitatae, ribesii-diversicoloris, ribesii-pendulae, ribis-nigri-lasiocarpae, ribis-nigri-paniculatae.
