No host plant alternation; aecia are missing. Spermogonia yellow, amphigenous, also on petioles and stem. Uredinia and telia mainly hypophyllous, soon naked, rust-coloured and black, respectively. Urediniospores 16-26 x 21-33 µm, spinulose, with 2 germination pores on the equator or somewhat beyond. Teliospores 16-30 x 23-47 µm, two-celled, short-oval, finely verrucose; pedicel short (30-50 µm, but sometimes up to 110 µm), hyaline, deciduous.
