Spermogonia amphigenous, numerous, large. Aecia hypophyllous, in groups on yellow to purple leaf spots, cupulate, with white, recurved margin split into segments and yellow spores. Uredinia amphigenous, long covered by the epidermis, ultimately brown, pulverulent; spores with 2-3(4) germination pores. Telia hypophyllous, black, compact; spores two-celled, 20-24 x 38-42 µm, brown, with apically strongly thickened wall; pedicel thick, persistent.
