No host plant alternation. Aecia hypophyllous, pustulate, scattered all over the leaf and often over all leaves of the plant; the leaves are discoloured and thickened. Uredinia mainly hypophyllous, 0.5 mm, bright brown; spores 16-26 x 19-26 µm, 2(-3) pores (Klenke & Scholler). Telia hypophyllous, often also on the stems, blackish brown. Teliospores two-celled, egg-shaped, hardly constricted; wall uniform, rather thin, pustulate; pedicel hyaline, deciduous. The fungus is systemic; infected plants are stunted, pale green and do not flower.
