They are amphigenous, reddish brown, pulverulent; often with a thickened margin, giving them somewhat the appearance of aecia; the spores are 2-celled, 13-25 x 26-45 µm, born on a short, deciduous pedicel. Infected plants are disfigured and remain sterile; the leaves are pale and thickened.
