Puccinia lagenophorae gall detail

Puccinia lagenophorae: aecia on Senecio vulgaris

Senecio vulgaris, Nieuwendam: the peridium is but weakly developed

Puccinia lagenophorae: aeciospores

aeciospores are formed in chains; once free their shape becomes more rounded

No host plant alternation, no spermogonia or uredinia. Telia are infrequently found; they ae shining blackish brown, compact; spores 2-celled, 17-25 x 34-48 µm, wall with some vertical lines.

host plants

Asteraceae, narrowly oligophagous

Bellis perennis (?); Calendula officinalis; Emilia coccinea, sonchifolia; Jacobaea vulgaris; Pallenis maritima; Pericallis hybrida; Senecio bollei, cambrensis. glaucus & subsp. coronopifolius, leucanthemifolius & subsp. vernalis, squalidus, viscosus, vulgaris.

The most important host plants are Senecio squalidus and vulgaris; especially the latter species can be severely hit. On Bellis the closely related P. distincta occurs, but it is not sure if next to that species also lagenophorae does occur on Bellis.

Puccinia terrieriana Mayor 1962.

This rust fungus is native to Australia, and has been found in Europe (France) as late as in 1961.
