Spermogonia epiphyllous, aecia hypophyllous, cupulate, both on intensively discoloured spots; spores 10-18 x 12-21 µm; attached to the spore wall a number of easily detached platelets.

uredinia and telia hypophyllous, also on the stems, on discoloured spots; the uredinia rust-coloured, the telia blackish brown. Urediniospores with 2(3) equatorial germination pores, that not are capped by a distinct papillae. Teliospores two-celled, wall of the top cell apically strongly thickened; on a persistent more or less hyaline pedicel of about same length as the spore.

Carex appropinquata, chordorrhiza, divulsa & subsp. leersii, muricata & subsp. pairae, paniculata, spicata.

synonyms

many authors, including Termorshuizen & Swertz, and also the Index Fungorum (2016) consider this species conspecific with Puccinia dioicae, or a variety of it.
