No host plant alternation, only uredinia en telia. The uredinia that are formed in spring (together with the spermogonia) form dark brown crusts on swellings, sometimes quite extensive, on the petioles. From June on the uredinia are much smaller; spores apically with a somewhat thickened wall, (2)3(4) germination pores. Telia very dark brown, mainly on the stem; spores two-celled, wall of uniform thickness, smooth; pedicel fragile, hyaline, about as long as the spore.
