all ovaries in an inflorescence are modified in a ± 1 mm large mass of spores. Initially it is covered by a brown membrane that later ruptures releasing the spore dust. Fresh spores smell of old herring; they have a reticiculate surface structure and measure 19-22 x 20-25 µm.
