The ovary is filled with a reddish brown mass of spores that (when fresh) smells of old herring. Spores reticulate, 16-21 x 17-23 µm; between the spores also smaller, hyaline, sterile cell. The fungus is systemic, therefore all fruits in an inflorescence are galled.
