gall
up to a cm long swellings of the stem, covered by a silver-grey membrane; when this eventually ruptures a blackish brown granular-powdery mass of spore balls is released. The spore balls measure 16-35 x 20-45 µm and consist of 1-7 spores, surrounded by an, often very incomplete, layer of smaller sterile cells.
