Urocystis gladiolicola

Urocystis gladiolicola Ainsworth, 1950

on Crocus, Gladiolus


up to several cm long, greyish brown, blister-like striae on the leaves, stems and bulb scales. Upon rupturing, a powdery, blackish brown mass of spore balls is released. The spore balls consist of 1-2(3) spores, completely invested by an irregular layer of steriele cells. The fungus is systemic, and hibernates in the underground parts of the plant.
