the plant is strongly disfigured
over a large surface the epidermis is shining black
infestation to a lesser degree also on the underside of the the leaves
The general aspect of the infection strongly reminds to the description of Uromyces scrophulariae. However, the blackened aspect was not caused by telia, but by a black discolouration of the epidermis. Microscopical study excluded any rust fungus.
