larva
mine
Small, angular, full depth blotch, often in a vein axil. Lower, in the end also upper, epidermis brown. The larva deposits some silk in the mine, but the quantity is so low that the mine remains practically flat. Later the larva leaves the mine and continues feeding within a down-folded leaf margin or leaf tip.
host plants
Betulaceae (and Sapindaceae?); oligophagous or narrowly polyphagous
Acer platanoides, pseudoplatanus; Carpinus betulus, orientalis; Ostrya carpinifolia.
When in the literature this species is associated with Acer it is under the name of P. eppelsheimi. Perhaps the synonymy of eppelsheimi with carpinella needs reconsideration.
phenology
Larvae in July and September-October (Hering, 1957a).
BENELUX
BE recorded (Phegea, 2009).
NE recorded (Kuchlein & de Vos, 1999a; Microlepidoptera.nl).
LUX not recorded (Fauna Europaea, 2009).
distribution within Europe
From Sweden to the Pyrenees, Italy, and Greece, nd from Britain to Russia (Fauna Europaea, 2009).
larva
Described by Emmet (1987a). Pronotum with four black spots (Parornix character).
pupa
Described by Patočka & Turčáni (2005a).
synonyms
Ornix carpinella; Ornix, Parornix, eppelsheimi Fuchs, 1901; Emmet, Watkinson & Wilson (1985a) considered carpinella a synonym of P. fagivora, but later Emmet has corrected this (1986a).
notes
Doets (1946a), who first reported the species in the Netherlands, found it “rather common” around Hilversum, but presently it is a rarity.
