larva, terminal prolegs
Quercus robur, Lage Mierde: to the right the cocoon, upside down
mine
Upper-surface blotch without any initial corridor; the colour is yellow-brown with concentric grey-green arcs. The larva soon starts making a discoidal cocoon in the centre of the mine. During feeding pauses it rests in the cocoon, curved in a horse-shoe position. The mine contains little or no frass. The full grown larva frees the cocoon from the mine by making a circulur cut in the upper epidermis of the leaf. It hibernates in the fallen cocoon.
host plants
Fagaceae, oligophagous
Castanea sativa; Quercus acutissima, cerris, faginea, x hispanica, ithaburensis subsp, macrolepis, mongolica, petraea, pubescens, robur & subsp. pedunculiflora, rubra, serrata, variabilis.
In the Netherlands a mine has been found on Fagus sylvatica; the larva had developed so far as to cut out its cocoon (van Wielink & Ellis, 2011a).
